An Ode to Training

motivation, athletic coaching, toronto, pace and mind

“The will to win means nothing if you haven’t the will to prepare.”

– Juma Ikangaa, 1989 NYC Marathon winner, 2nd at Boston Marathon 1988, 1989, 1990

Pace & Mind runner Andrew Young doesn’t have a lot of free time on his hands. As a busy newsman, he’s forced to balance a very demanding job in the newsroom with a progressively intense training schedule at Pace & Mind. When we asked him what Pace & Mind meant to him, he responded with the following poem/’ode to training’ which motivates, clearly describes what it takes to run mile after mile in a cycle that challenges one to go beyond what’s possible. We hope it ignites an internal passion that burns to your next of life’s goals.

P

It takes PATIENCE, PASSION and PERSISTENCE.

For every hard interval or nauseating hill repeat — are hurdles that go beyond training. Days that start before dawn. The hurts you earned. The injuries you overcome.

A

Running is about ACCUMULATION.
The marathon: Much more than the measure of 42.2k.
Monday’s medals are built on the long runs you put in on the weekend. The mileage you put in every week. The hard work you put in every day.

C

It takes COURAGE to face your limits. — A deep will to transcend them.

E

To be excellent, you need to ELEVATE. And work past fear, failure and can’t. Evaluate wants. Manage expectations. Make every second count.

&

M

What’s my MOTIVATION?
It’s more than any one, singular goal. It’s the sum of many parts.
To be your best, is to do your best. And committing to whatever it takes to get there.

Find your crew. Find your self.

I

Be inspired. And INSPIRE those around you.

N

It’s about NEVER SAY NEVER.
And not backing down because something is hard.

D

Because what you DO today will have the greatest bearing on tomorrow. Set the PACE. Settle your MIND. #OwnTheRoad and #RunForYourLife

About Pace & Mind

Pace & Mind is an advanced ‘tough love’ coaching service for distance runners. We offer advanced and highly customized 5k, 10k, half-marathon and marathon coaching for runners to improve their performance both on and off the road. Our coaching is based on the principles founded by Head Coach and Co-founder Rejean Chiasson, a Canadian marathon champion, 4x half-marathon medalist and NIKE+ NRC Coach. He is supported by our Online Run Coach, Kate Van Buskirk, an internationally accomplished track and field athlete, bronze medalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Brooks Elite Ambassador. Unlike traditional ‘cookie-cutter’ or ‘clinic’ approaches to coaching, our Coaches first assesses, then customizes each runner’s training program based on:

INDIVIDUALITY * PROGRESSION * RECOVERY * MOTIVATION * COMMITMENT * COMMUNITY

Coaching programs are powered by TrainingPeaks software to ensure data accuracy. No runner’s program is the same and it constantly changes season by season, cycle by cycle. Our Coaches review your plan in detail each week, then adjust based on your progression and listens to you in terms of changes in nutrition, mental state and cross training efforts. Each runner also receives a cross-training plan and a racing singlet as part of the program.

You have one life to live. Run for your life
